This month is prostate/ovarian cancer awareness month.  Listed below are the risk factors for each and a link to where you can find more infromation.

Risk Factors for Ovarian Cancer

  • Women over 40 are at a much higher risk
  • Obesity
  • Not having had a child
  • Increased Androgen levels
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Family history
  •  History of breast cancer

  • Men over 40 are at a much higher risk
  • Occurs more often in African-Americans
  • Family History
  • Inflammation of the prostate

  • Skin cancer is broken into melanoma and nonmelanoma cancers

  • 2007 almost 60,000 melanoma cases in US

  • Over 8000 deaths per year from melanoma

  • Over 1 million nonmelanoma skin cancers diagnosed per year

  • Over 2700 deaths in 2007 from nonmelanoma skin cancers

  • Risk factors:
    • Unprotected UV radiation exposure- SUN
    • Fair complexion
    • Family history
    • Multiple or atypical moles
    • Severe sunburns as a child

  • How to prevent
    • Avoid sun between 10 am and 4 pm
    • Seek shade
    • Wear a shirt and hat
    • Wear sunscreen and sunglasses
    • Avoid tanning beds
    • Follow these practices even on cloudy and overcast days
    • Monthly self skin exams

  • Melanoma warning signs: ABCD's of melanomas
    • A- symmetry
    • B- borders
    • C- color
    • D- diameter

  • Other warning signs
    • Sore that does not heal
    • New growth
    • Spread of pigment from the border of a spot to surrounding skin
    • Change in sensation- itching, tenderness, and pain
    • Change in surface of mole- scaly, oozing, bleeding, bump, or nodule


Dr. Jenkins named Texas Super Doctor 4th Consecutive Year

Dr. Terry Jenkins was chosen Texas Monthly's "Texas Super Doctor" in the category of oncology for the 4th consecutive year. Winners were determined from a Texas Monthly survey of more than 45,000 Texas doctors, nurse practitioners, and nurse managers, asking: "To whom would you refer a loved one or one of your patients for medical diagnosis and/or treatments?" Congratulations, Dr. Jenkins!


Dr. Fleener to Speak at Surviving & Thriving Luncheon

Dr. Erin Fleener will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Surviving and Thriving luncheon on October 9, 2007 at 11:30 AM at the College Station Hilton. The annual event is designed to raise breast cancer awareness in the Bryan/College Station community and benefits the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Center at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Dr. Fleener will give an update on breast cancer developments during the luncheon.
